Spring is here, and that meant it was time for MarineParents.com’s second Care Package Project pack day of 2014! On Saturday, April 26, approximately 40 volunteers from across the Midwest showed their support for our troops by coming to our corporate office in Columbia, MO, to pack and ship care packages to Marines deployed to Afghanistan.
Each box contained various food and drink items, as well as other assorted other items, including books, pens, pencils, and various toiletries such as soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. Also included were American-made American flags from our “500 Flags Campaign.”
Approximately 40 volunteers from across the Midwest were here to help, and it seemed like the 400 care packages were packed, sealed, and ready to be sent in no time at all. Volunteers came to help from Wisconsin, Ohio, Kansas, Iowa, and Missouri.
Additionally, we had some special guests on hand. Volunteer Sharon and her husband drove all the way from Ohio to be a part of pack day as a birthday present for Sharon. Despite not having any ties to the Marine Corps, Sharon decided she wanted to be a part of pack day after hearing a radio host in Ohio with a Marine son talking about our organization on his show.
Our other special guests were volunteer Patty, from Wisconsin, and her Marine son Matt. Like Sharon, Patty wanted to come be a part of pack day as a birthday present, and, since he always has trouble picking out gifts for her, Patty was able to convince Matt to come along as his present to his mother. Also, having previously received a care package from us while deployed, Matt wanted to take the time to come give back to his fellow Marines, as he knows firsthand just how much one of our care packages can boost morale in the field.
April was National Volunteer Month, and after the packing was done, it was time to recognize, honor, celebrate, and thank the many, many Marine Parents volunteers and all of the hard work that they've done over the last 12 months. Without them, our mission of supporting the troops and their families would not be possible, so a big Ooh-rah goes out to all of our wonderful volunteers.
Additionally, we auctioned off several prizes throughout the day. Seven prizes were auctioned off and more than $200 was raised, all of which went to the LCpl. Leon B. Deraps Memorial Scholarship Fund.
After packing, while waiting for lunch to arrive and get set up, we had the opportunity to share our successes for the past year and recognize our volunteers with a small thank you gift. We also recognized the volunteers who were present and had qualified for a Presidential Volunteer Service Award, as well as presenting volunteers Jeff and Angie with the Marine Parents Local Volunteer of the Year and Marine Parents Outreach Support Programs awards, respectively.
The lunch itself was delicious. Lonnie Ray's BBQ catered the event, and provided us with pulled pork and brisket sandwiches, two types of barbeque sauce (one sweet, the other spicy) beans, chips, and beverages, with cake for dessert, and all of our pack day volunteers received a customized coffee mug from the EGA shop as a token of our appreciation.
