Despite some very inclement weather in the week leading up to our most recent pack day, the day of was warm and sunny—perfect weather for packing and shipping over 600 care packages.

Each box contained 2 boxes of Girl Scout cookies, drink mixes, candy, jerky, canned foods, ramen noodles, and other assorted other items, including books, pens, pencils, and various toiletries such as soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. Also included were a total of 1,851 hand-written cards and letters to the troops from all over the U.S.

82 volunteers from across the Midwest were here to help, and it seemed like the 617 care packages were packed, sealed, and ready to be sent in no time at all. Volunteers came to help from Minnesota, Indiana, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Kansas, and Michigan, as well as from Missouri.

Additionally, we had a special guest on hand. Ryan, a Lance Corporal in the Marines home on leave, drove in from Kansas with his family to be a part of pack day. Having previously received a care package from us while deployed, Ryan wanted to take the time to come give back to his fellow Marines, as he knows firsthand just how much one of our care packages can boost morale in the field.

April was National Volunteer Month, and after the packing was done, it was time to recognize, honor, celebrate, and thank the many, many Marine Parents volunteers and all of the hard work that they've done over the last 12 months. Without them, our mission of supporting the troops and their families would not be possible, so a big Ooh-rah goes out to all of our wonderful volunteers.

After packing, while waiting for lunch to arrive and get set up, we had the opportunity to share our successes for the past year and recognize our volunteers with a small thank you gift. We also recognized some of our local volunteers—Mendy, Andrea and Jeff—with Presidential Volunteer Service Awards, as well as presenting volunteer Patty with the Marine Parents Local Volunteer of the Year award.

After presenting the awards, it was time to hold our pack day raffle. Volunteer Joe, from St. Louis, had spent the morning collecting money from those volunteers who wished to purchase raffle tickets. Six prizes were auctioned off and a total of $819 was raised, all of which went to the LCpl. Leon B. Deraps Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The lunch itself was delicious. Lonnie Ray's BBQ catered the event, and provided us with pulled pork and brisket sandwiches, two types of barbeque sauce (one sweet, the other spicy) beans, chips, and beverages. Cake, cookies, and brownies were served for dessert, and all of our pack day volunteers received a customized coffee mug from the EGA shop as a token of our appreciation.
