Bitterly cold temperatures in Columbia, MO relented for a day, giving us a sunny and pleasant morning to ship care packages overseas last Saturday. .

The boxes contained 2 cans of soup to keep our troops warm in the field, thanks to our very successful "souper heroes" fundraising drive. Boxes also included assorted other items, including books, decks of cards, ramen noodles, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. Also included were a total of 8831 hand-written cards and letters to the troops from all over the U.S.

Over 100 volunteers were here to help, so there was no shortage of helping hands available. Due to our continuing drawdown of troops in Afghanistan, only 530 packages were sent this time, so work went quickly and everyone was on their way to their next event by noon.

Volunteers came to help from Minnesota, Indiana, Kansas, and Michigan, as well as from Missouri. Bob and Kim from Minnesota have together been to about seven pack days, and this time, as usual, they filled their suitcases with donations to the Care Package Project for the flight in. They also had a couple of jewelry items to pack back home with them, as they did have some success in the pack day raffle.

In the warehouse, the lines were packed with volunteers, shoulder to shoulder. Others literally scaled the shelving units to toss down boxes of items to restock the line. Football players and fraternity members from Westminster college were a strong contingent, and members of the Mizzou Black Men’s Initiative (MBMI) and boy scout troop 705 from Columbia all worked together to complete the work in near-record time. Boxes were flying down three long tables in parallel lines. Full almost to bursting, they flowed through taping, customs, and postage stations, to eventually be flung down ringing rollers the length of the warehouse by Dennis, 14, from Union, MO and shuttled into waiting mail trucks. Meanwhile, girl scout troop 70258 worked with others inside sorting materials, and securing liquid items in individual plastic wraps for shipping.

After the packing was done, it was time to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Marine Parents organization. 122 volunteers made quick work of a delicious red velvet sheet cake celebrating ten years of service. And people could eat their cake outside if they felt so inclined, in a warm, swirling breeze in front of the corporate office, after taking a photo or two.
