October 20, 2012 Packing Day for The Care Package Project™

82 volunteers arrived at Marine Parents headquarters in Columbia, MO on Saturday, October 20th and packed a total of 554 care packages for Marines in Afghanistan. We had volunteers come in from all over the country, including visitors from Illinois, Kansas, North Carolina, Minnesota and Pennsylvania. This pack day, the shipped boxes had a birthday theme, in honor of the 237th Marine Corps Birthday

The day began with coffee and doughnuts at 8 am, as volunteers signed in and got organized. After announcements, team meetings, and a collective prayer, the assembly line process of packing and shipping boxes began. The boxes included a variety of items to remind troops of back home, including turkey dinners, warm hats for the coming winter in Afghanistan, socks, t-shirts, girl scout cookies, hard candy, energy bars, batteries, cigars, etc., etc. The boxes also included hand written cards from people all over America, and even contained balloons and a Twinkie for their Marine Corps Birthday celebration.

The Care Package Project began in December 2004, in Memory of LCpl. Nicholas Larson, who was killed in action in Fallujah, Iraq the previous November. In lieu of flowers, the family of LCpl. Larson requested that donations be sent to MarineParents to support troops serving overseas. From that initial gesture, a project was born that has now let thousands of servicemen know that the sacrifices they make are appreciated by Americans back home.

Since its beginning, the Care Package Project has shipped 35,107 packages overseas to servicemen serving in combat zones such as those in Afghanistan and Iraq. We would like to thank all of our volunteers for their hard work. We also thank all of our generous contributors, without whom we would be unable to continue this work.

A Special Thank You to:
